DENVER, Colo. -- Newly-released court documents show a Montbello mother was killed while trying to save her daughter during a stabbing attack.
The double homicide happened on Friday around 7:30 a.m. at a home in the 5000 block of Revere Street.
The coroner identified the victims as 26-year-old Maira Cordero, and 45-year-old Raquel Cordero. A family member discovered their bodies and called 911.
According the arrest affidavit, Denver Police later arrested Angel Chavez after home surveillance video showed him fleeing the scene.
Court documents state Chavez had recently gotten out of jail for, "shaking his daughter." He was charged with felony child abuse in 2007 and was sentenced to 20 years.
Chavez was out on parole and had been living with Maira and their two kids, but records show she planned to end their relationship and "go back to Antonio Dominguez, who'd proposed to marry her" and who she had another child with.
The week of the murder, Chavez apparently tried to sabotage those plans by sending a text to Dominguez "to boast about his sexual activity with her," according to court documents.
On Friday, July 22, the day of the murder, Cordero was supposed to spend the day with Dominguez which is why police believe Chavez "attacked her with some type of edge weapon."
In the affidavit, officers said they think Maira's mom heard the commotion, tried to save her daughter and was stabbed as a result.
Denver7 obtained court records from Chavez's 2007 child abuse case.
The case file shows Chavez wrote a handwritten letter to the judge from prison in 2009.
In the letter, he asks for the lethal injection and writes he doesn't want to be a burden to his mom or anyone else anymore and "if I can't be with my family, I don't want to be around."
The judge would later deny his request, and Chavez wrote another letter apologizing for sending it.
