Costco recalls Kirkland Signature Real Sliced Fruit for potential Salmonella contamination

DENVER - Costco has recalled nearly 60,000 cases of Kirkland Signature Real Sliced Fruit after determining the product has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.

The affected freeze-dried fruit packages are sold in a red and white case that have a "Best Before" date between Feb. 14, 2015 and March 11, 2015 (stamped FEB142015 - MAR112015 on the left hand corner of the  box).

The voluntary recall began on March 8. Costco said it has contacted everyone who has purchased the product and notified them of the recall by phone or email, urging them to return the product to the place of purchase for a full refund. A letter regarding the voluntary recall was also posted on the Costco website.

Cases of the potentially contaminated Kirkland Signature Real Sliced Fruit were distributed to Costco Wholesale stores in Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Wisconsin, and Puerto Rico.

The affected product has also been removed from Costco floors.

The FDA said no confirmed cases of Salmonella poisoning from consuming the product have been reported at this time.

The manufacturer, Oregon Freeze Dry, Inc. issued the recall as a proactive safety precaution.

Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.

Any Kirkland Signature Real Sliced Fruit that is currently available for purchase has been rigorously tested and is safe for consumption, the FDA said.
