Police say a drunk fan was chasing a friend's hat when he tried to jump between two stairwell landings at Sports Authority Field and fell several stories during the Denver Broncos' season opener Sunday.

The man landed on a concrete ramp, suffering serious head injuries and was transported to Denver Health Medical Center, police said. Authorities have not released the 42-year-old man's name.

The man and his wife were at the Broncos-Ravens game when a friend's hat "flew off" and fell onto a stairwell landing on the west side of the stadium, a police report said. The man tried to jump from the nearest landing onto the adjacent landing where the hat fell, but he plunged through an opening between the landings -- falling onto a concrete ramp.

"The victim was highly intoxicated," the police report said.

While police estimated Sunday that the fall was about 15-feet, the report issued Monday says the man dropped "several stories."
