Confessed hit-and-run driver Juan Hernandez-Lupercio gets 7 year sentence in death of motorcyclist

LAKEWOOD, Colo. - The driver who pleaded guilty in March to driving away from a fatal crash last summer was sentenced to seven years in prison.

Juan Hernandez-Lupercio, 47, was sentenced on May 6. He had previously pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death.

On Aug. 16, 2013, Hernandez-Lupercio backed his truck out of a driveway at 635 S. Sheridan. An oncoming motorcyclist, Dana Schaeffer, was unable to stop and crashed into the truck.

Hernandez-Lupercio did not stop to help and instead drove to his girlfriend's house, 1st Judicial District Attorney's spokeswoman Pam Russell said.

Schaeffer later died of his injuries and Hernandez-Lupercio was arrested at his girlfriend's house the next day.
