Colorado Springs man detained in case of mistaken identity says he was injured while handcuffed

John Sturgis filed federal lawsuit

DENVER - A man detained in a case of mistaken identity has filed a federal lawsuit accusing Colorado Springs police of injuring him when they handcuffed him while he was recovering from shoulder surgery.

John Sturgis said police were looking for a murder suspect when they stopped him last year.  He was handcuffed and later released when police realized they had the wrong man.

According to the Denver Post, Sturgis says he told police he had surgery on his left shoulder a month earlier and asked the officers to be careful.

The city attorney's office says the officers acted properly and there was no excessive force.
