DENVER -- The Colorado Lottery is trying to stay competitive by adding new games.
At the end of October, the lottery added a second daily drawing to its “Pick 3” game at 1:30 in the afternoon.
The midday drawing is new to Colorado, though several states have been doing the draws for years.
"We thought it was a good opportunity to add another draw,” said lottery spokeswoman Val Beck.
Last year - the Colorado Lottery brought in a hefty $604 million -- thanks in part to a $1.5 billion Powerball jackpot.
This year, it hopes to bring in $590 million.
Lottery officials say there is no choice but to be innovative. That's why it introduced another new game – “Lucky for Life” - where winners get $1,000 a day for life.
“Those trails that you’re out exploring on, on the weekends, the state parks, we need to make sure we meet our thresholds with them every year," said Beck.
In some states, there are four lottery drawings a day. That's not on the table here in Colorado. But new games are constantly under review.
"We have to stay on the cutting edge,” she said.
