Cluttered basement fuels flames in Lakewood house fire; cold temps keep firefighters busy

LAKEWOOD, Colo. - Two people escaped from a house fire in Lakewood Thursday afternoon, but the bitter cold temperatures prevented firefighters from quickly putting the flames out.

Firefighters battled the fire in temps that hovered around zero degrees.

The West Metro Fire department told 7NEWS that crews were not able to safely enter the house and identify what started the fire, but they do know that it began in the basement just after 3 p.m..

The house, located on the 8700 block of W. Alaska Avenue, apparently had a significant amount of belongings in the basement, providing fuel for the flames, according to West Metro Fire.

No one was injured in the fire.
