Climber dies in Clear Creek Canyon fall

GOLDEN, Colo. - A climber died Saturday after falling in Clear Creek Canyon near Golden.

The accident happened around 1 p.m. near Tunnel One, off Highway 6 in the canyon, just west of Golden.

The area where the 62-year-old climber fell is known as the "Canal Zone."

Rescuers said the climber fell 50 to 60 feet while climbing with two adult children in their 20s.  A witness to the accident told 7NEWS the climber probably fell 80 feet.

Jefferson County spokeswoman Jacki Kelley said the man was declared dead at St. Anthony Central Hospital.

The Golden Fire Department, Foothills Fire Department, and Genesee Fire Department responded,  along with Jeffco deputies.

The victim's identity has not been released.
