LITTLETON, Colo. - A young boy was run over and killed in a Littleton shopping center parking lot Saturday.
Police said the fatal accident happened at 10:38 a.m. at the Aspen Grove Shopping Center, 7301 S. Santa Fe Dr.
Police taped off the area Saturday afternoon and were questioning the driver and witnesses.
7NEWS learned the victim was 2 years old. He was hit by a vehicle backing out of a parking space, according to some witnesses. Police said they were still trying to determine if the vehicle was backing up or moving through the lot when the boy was hit.
"Lots of people ran over to help," said Allison Orchard. "I just kind of stayed back. I wasn’t sure what I could do to help ... The mom was just holding her baby on the ground until the paramedics arrived."
She said the woman who was driving the SUV was also screaming.
A red Lincoln Navigator could be seen in the middle of the taped-off area after the accident. It was towed away at about 2 p.m. as the police investigation into what happened continued.
Witnesses said the boy was still alive when he was put into an ambulance. He was transported to Littleton Adventist Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The boy was at the mall to get his picture taken with his family, according to witnesses.
