The Central City police chief has apologized to citizens for scaring them.

Gilpin County deputies will now monitor the town, meaning the end of the police department.

Chief Terry Krelle clarified that on Monday, saying negotiations with the county just began, and police want to hear from the community.

"I had a temporary lapse in judgment, and I not only jumped the gun, but my comments may have led people to believe things that were not true," he said. "Truth be told, I let my emotions get the best of me."

Krelle said his statements were premature because a decision hasn't been reached. He takes full responsibility for confusion, he said.

Meetings will happen this week at 7 p.m. at City Hall.
