SUV crashes into Denver building, critically injuring woman

Crash under investigation

DENVER - An SUV crashed into a commercial building at S. Colorado Boulevard and E. Amherst Avenue Saturday morning.

A number of people were initially reported to have been trapped.  Denver Police said the driver and  four other people were rushed to the hospital.

The 60-year-old business owner was reported in critical condition Saturday afternoon.

It happened just after 10 a.m., at Accent Optics, 2795 South Colorado Blvd.  The intersection of Colorado and Amherst was closed by police as rescue operations continued Saturday morning.  Firefighters worked to shore up the building.

The Chevrolet Tahoe was still inside the building at noon.

7NEWS weekend anchor Christine Chang said it happened on the northwest corner of the intersection of Colorado and Amherst was closed by police.  Eyewitnesses told Chang they saw the SUV going north, in southbound lanes on Colorado Boulevard at a high rate of speed.

The driver was a 24-year-old man, according to police.

Investigators said they recovered evidence that impaired driving may have been a factor. They believe it to be a drug or narcotics -- not alcohol.  They are awaiting a lab report to confirm.
