ELBERT COUNTY, Colo. – A brush fire that sparked around noon Monday east of Kiowa was mostly contained by 2:45 p.m. after it burned around 150 acres.

One firefighter suffered a broken arm while battling the flames, which briefly threatened two homes around 6 miles east of Kiowa along County Road 83.

The fire was 95 percent contained as of 2:40 p.m. after burning an estimated 150 acres.

Elizabeth Fire, one of the many agencies that worked the fire, said crew had to battle windy conditions and low visibility while battling the blaze.

More than 98 percent of Colorado is experiencing abnormally-dry conditions, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor. Thirty-five percent of the state, including the area that burned Monday, is under moderate drought conditions.

The fire was 100 percent contained by Monday evening.
