DENVER – A bill that will relax the penalties assessed to drivers who fail to pay their traffic tickets on time is making its way through the state legislature.
House Bill 1162 passed the House Judiciary Committee this week and will now head to the House Appropriations Committee.
The bill would drop certain penalties associated with failure to pay a traffic ticket. Currently, offenders face jail time, a suspended license and a misdemeanor charge.
The proposed bill would make a failure to pay a ticket a traffic offense with a fine up to $100.
“We've criminalized failing to pay a traffic fine. And the consequences are way too steep for somebody who just owes the government money,” said Rep. Matt Gray.
