Denver Mayor Michael B. Hancock has big plans for the 16th Street Mall this summer.

The mall and its cross-streets will feature interactive pop-up events, community-led activities and temporary transportation alternatives when Meet in the Street returns. It will run for five consecutive weekends, starting on June 25.

There also are plans for expanded patio seating, temporary design installations, dance classes and food events.

Last year Meet in the Street was only held on Sundays, this summer there will be events on both weekend days.

"The expansion of Meet in the Street, now in its third year, to include both weekend days will allow us to continue to refine important elements of the 16th Street Mall to ensure it remains a thriving public space," said Tami Door, President and CEO of the Downtown Denver Partnership.

This is coming as the city plans to add or replace up to 182 lights along the 16th Street Mall.

The city is getting recommendations from a new report by Gehl Studio.  Gehl Studio looked into the Meet in the Street event last year, and is identifying ways to help the mall reach its full potential.

More plans about Meet in the Street and other summer activation programs will be announced later this spring.
