Avalanche cleared from Monarch Pass between Salida and Gunnison, Hwy 50 still closed

An avalanche that closed a section of Monarch Pass just west of the summit has been cleared but Highway 50 remains closed for avalanche reduction and clean-up.

CDOT said all commercial vehicles will be required to chain up, once Highway 50 over the pass is open.

The avalanche was "as deep as the CDOT trucks clearing it," the Colorado State Patrol in Cañon City tweeted at 5:30 a.m.

There is no estimate for when US 50 will reopen.

Monarch Ski Area is still accessible from Salida, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.
