Authorities ID man wounded in shootout with Manitou Springs police last weekend

MANITOU SPRINGS, Colo. - Authorities have identified a man wounded in a shootout with Manitou Springs police at the historic La Fon Motel early Saturday morning.

The shooting suspect, identified as 37-year-old Christopher Clemons, was in stable condition Monday at a hospital, the El Paso County Sheriff's Office said in a new release. The sheriff's office and the Fourth Judicial District Attorney’s Office are investigating the shooting.

The shooting happened about 2 a.m. Saturday as two Manitou Springs police officers were conducting an investigation at the motel at 123 Manitou Avenue. KRDO-TV reported the officers were checking out a Crime Stoppers tip.

During the investigation, an altercation ensued and the suspect, Clemons, allegedly fired at one of the officers The officer returned fire, striking the suspect, the sheriff's office said. The officer was not injured.

According to the Pikes Peak Area Crime Stoppers website, Clemons is 6-feet-7-inches tall, 280 pounds and was wanted for parole violation, escape, drugs and theft.
