Family members have identified the woman killed in a double stabbing Saturday night as Mireya Ramirez, a mother of four.
The victim's mother, who was also stabbed, says it was her 28-year-old daughter's boyfriend who attacked them before he was shot and killed by an Aurora Police officer.
June Simpson said she heard her daughter screaming Saturday evening in their home on North Kenton Street, near East 6th Avenue and Havana Street.
"I had to knock the door down and go in," Simpson said. "And when I went in there, she was on the ground bleeding and he was on top of her, stabbing her. So I grabbed the knife from his hand and tackled him down and punched him, and was able to get her free from him."
She said Ramirez ran outside and down the street, but her boyfriend followed, continuing to attack her.
Neighbors tried to intervene, but were unable to help.
"I went running down the street, and there was a girl laying in the gutter and a guy was standing over her," said neighbor, Kathleen Barber. "I couldn't really see anything, but she was kicking him, like in a self-defense thing, saying that she wanted her mom."
Police arrived just minutes after Simpson called 911. Simpson said her daughter's boyfriend was still attacking her, and refused to put his hands up. An officer shot and killed him.
The officer who killed the suspect has been placed on administrative leave with pay.
A family member said Ramirez had only been dating the man for a few months and they didn't know much about him. They said he had been violent with her before.
"He tried to yell at her in front of me, and I don't like that," said Ramiro Escamilla, Ramirez's stepfather. "I told her I didn't like him. He just seemed like a mean person, and I just told her, 'Find someone else.'"
The family hopes what happened might be a wake up call to someone else in an abusive relationship.
"She didn't deserve this. No one does. And the next thing you know it's too late," Escamilla said.
