Aurora Police find missing 8-year-old girl near 1st and Peoria

AURORA, Colo. - Aurora Police have found a missing 8-year-old girl who disappeared in the area of 1st Avenue and Peoria Street.

A neighbor called police when he saw a child running through an apartment complex, Aurora Police said.

Officers flooded the area and found Maria Burkhart.

Aurora Police said the girl was OK.

Video from the neighborhood showed two police officers walking the girl home.

Burkhart's father returned home a few minutes later. He said he was "really relieved."

"I just hope everything's OK," Scott Burkhart said. "Thank you for everyone who's [sic] helped."

Maria Burkhart was last seen at 8 p.m. Monday, when her parents put her to bed, according to the Aurora Police Department.

Her parents discovered her missing this morning.

The parents said the girl was wearing purple Justin Bieber pajamas when she was put to bed. But when officers walked her home, she appeared to be in jeans and a long-sleeve shirt.

The neighborhood has multiple apartment buildings and homes. It is near the Highline Canal, Highline Park ball fields and a golf course.

Scott Burkhart said the girl never disappeared before.
