AURORA, Colo. -- On Monday, the Aurora City Council passed a resolution declaring that Aurora is not a "sanctuary city” as defined by the Donald Trump administration.

Earlier this year, the president issued an Executive Order that threatened to withhold federal funding from cities that fail to comply with federal immigration laws.

The resolution, which passed in a 6-4 vote, states that "Aurora is not a sanctuary city or a “sanctuary jurisdiction” as that term is used in the recent Executive Order." And "Aurora will continue its practice of non-obstruction with regard to Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s efforts to enforce federal immigration laws and regulations."

Both Aurora and Denver have been labeled as cities that take a lenient approach to enforcing federal immigration laws. The resolution states that Aurora "values its immigrant communities and takes seriously the public safety and constitutional rights of all residents."
