An Arapahoe County deputy is fighting for his life after he was involved in a crash on his way to a homicide investigation.

Investigators said Deputy Bill Foreman Jr., 55, who was driving a Ford Interceptor, was following an ambulance when he was hit by a pickup truck on Iliff at South Valentia Street around 6 a.m. Wednesday.

"The front of the F-350 struck the driver’s side of the Ford Interceptor causing it to rotate counter-clockwise and come to rest on the north side sidewalk of East Iliff," according to the Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office.

Investigators said the ambulance had its lights and siren activated and that the ambulance and the deputy had the green light.

Sources told Denver7 the deputy was trapped in the patrol car after it was hit and had to be rescued.

The 25-year veteran with the force was taken to Aurora South Medical Center with critical injuries.

The male driver of the F-350, Felipe Castanda Alacala, 58, was not hurt, deputies said. Alacala was cited Wednesday afternoon for careless driving causing injury and for failing to yield right-of-way.

The homicide investigationwas at an apartment building near the intersection where the crash occurred.

Police went to the apartment after a woman called 911 about a sexual assault. Inside the apartment, they found a 6-year-old boy dead and a man with self-inflicted stab wounds. A 2-year-old boy was found unharmed in the apartment, officials said.

"We are providing all of the support we can at this difficult time to Deputy Foreman’s family, as well as our staff,” said Sheriff Dave Walcher. “His condition remains critical, but we are confident that he is getting the best care possible and we are thankful to the staff at the Medical Center of Aurora for their life-saving efforts. Seconds mattered, and we are grateful for the fast work of the personnel from the Cunningham Fire Department, Aurora Fire Department and Falck Ambulance.  They worked to free Deputy Foreman from his vehicle and provided life-saving efforts while he was being transported to the hospital.”
