Arapahoe County courthouse evacuated over suspicious bags

Bags were found to contain personal items

ARAPAHOE COUNTY, Colo. - The suspicious bags that caused one of the two Arapahoe County courthouse buildings to be evacuated Monday afternoon contained personal items, authorities said.

A suspicious backpack and a gym-type bag were found by security in Courthouse One at about 12:13 p.m.

Courthouse One was evacuated, according to Capt. Glenn Thompson with the Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office.

7NEWS talked to Lori Smith who was in the middle of jury selection when she was told to evacuate.

"It was very orderly. We were on the fourth floor and everybody got on the elevator and went down to the first floor and everybody very orderly walked out of the building," Smith said.

The evacuation lasted until 2:30 p.m.

In the meantime, the bomb squad evaluated the bags and found they contained only personal items. Without identifying the owner of the bags, the sheriff's office said they appeared to have been left behind by someone who didn't want to bring them into the courthouse.

Courthouse two was locked down, with staff and visitors told to stay in place.

The courthouses are on Potomac Street in Centennial.
