Big names give to local races

DENVER - 7NEWS has learned several national politicians and interest groups are contributing to Colorado school board races.
The amount of money being spent rivals contributions for state legislative seats -- even congressional races.
Campaign finance records reveal former Florida Governor Jeb Bush donated $1,000 each to Douglas County school board candidates Judi Reynolds, Jim Geddes, Doug Benevento and Meghann Silverthorn.
In addition, the group Americans For Prosperity has spent about $350,000 to support school reform in the region, according to an official.
Observers point out Douglas County is in contention because of recent bold moves by the Douglas County School District board, including its support for a voucher program. Under the voucher system, parents are allowed to use public dollars to finance their children's private education.
In Denver, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg has contributed $75,000 to a group that is supporting candidates who support Denver Public Schools Superintendent Tom Boasberg's agenda.
