AURORA, Colo. – Five people were taken to the hospital after fire tore through an Aurora apartment building early Monday.

Firefighters responded to an apartment complex at 12th and Dallas streets around 2 a.m. and immediately called out a second alarm due to the fire being in a multi-family structure.

Fire officials said five victims were taken to area hospitals with injuries ranging from minor to severe.

The American Red Cross was on scene to help residents who were displaced by the fire, but it wasn’t immediately clear how many people that was. Nearly a dozen units were affected.

Summer Velez, who lives on the third floor of the complex, says she was able to escape via a ladder.

"I was going to jump out of the window," she said. "I could hear my neighbors next to me. I could hear a lady in there screaming bloody murder, and come to find out, she was in there being burned alive."

It’s not yet clear what caused the fire.
