Three Adams County schools were on lockout as police searched for an armed carjacker near 70th and Pecos Monday morning

The schools put on lockout were:

  • FM Day Elementary
  • Scott Carpenter Middle
  • Skyline Vista El

The carjacking occurred near St. Paul and Clayton Street in Thornton.

A person pulled out a shotgun and forced the driver out of an orange Ford Bronco, according to Thornton Police.

An officer saw the Bronco near Interstate 25 and Thornton Parkway and began following the driver. The driver went southbound on I-25 to westbound Highway 36. Police called off the pursuit around Highway 36 and Broadway.

A short time later, someone reported seeing suspicious activity near 68th and Pecos.

The witness said a black man got out of a vehicle, placed a firearm in a backpack and ran south. A woman also got out of the car and ran, the witness told police.

Investigators set up a perimeter to search for the individuals but lifted the lockout at the schools a few hours later.
