2 workers injured when diesel tank explodes at Loveland sand-and-gravel company

Fire official:Workers were cutting or welding tank

LOVELAND, Colo. - Two workers were injured when a diesel tank exploded at a Loveland sand-and-gravel company on Monday afternoon.

Firefighters were initially dispatched on reports of a building explosion at Jake Kauffman & Son Inc. at 808 S. County Road 9E.

Loveland Fire Battalion Chief Jason Starck said workers were either cutting or welding a large diesel fuel tank, which still contained residual fuel, and that exploded.

One worker was transported by ambulance to the Medical Center of the Rockies, and the second worker drove himself there. Both had facial trauma, Starck said. No conditions were given for the men.

The explosion ignited a fire, but other workers put it out.

Fire officials are still investigating the cause of the explosion.
