DURANGO, Colo. -
Two men have been sentenced to jail after one picked up a human skull during a hike that the other helped organize at archaeological sites in southwest Colorado.
The hike happened last year at Canyons of the Ancients National Monument.
The Durango Herald reports 76-year-old Howard H. Drake of Silverton received a 10-day sentence Thursday for picking up the skull after an undercover federal officer asked to see it. Eighty-one-year-old Harry Hance of Montezuma County was sentenced to three days in jail for helping organize the hike, which was for a club for older adults.
Both apologized in court.
Both will be on supervised release for one year, during which time they are prohibited from being on Bureau of Land Management land except to travel across using roads.
