COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Colorado Springs police have arrested a 17-year-old suspect in the death of a Fort Carson soldier and his wife.
Police believe Macyo Joelle January shot and killed Staff Sgt. David C. Dunlap, 37, and Whitney Butler, 35, when they walked in on him burglarizing their home Monday.
Police said January was arrested at an apartment in the 300 block of East Bijou Street.
Staff Sgt. Dunlap had served in the army for nearly 10 years. He had just arrived at Fort Carson two months ago.
Dunlap had earned several medals, ribbons and badges including the Iraqi Campaign Medal with Campaign Star, Valorous Unit Award, Meritorious Service Medal and Army Commendation Medal.
KRDO TV quoted a family friend as saying Dunlap and his wife were expecting their first child.
Video of the front of the home taken by KRDO shows an ADT alarm system sign next to the front door.
