BRIGHTON, Colo. – State troopers say alcohol appears to have been a factor in a crash that killed a 14-year-old girl from Thornton Sunday night.

The Colorado State Patrol said the girl was driving south on Riverdale Road near Brighton when she lost control of the vehicle and went off the road near 153rd, went through a fence and down an embankment shortly before 9:30 p.m.

The driver died and three passengers – two 17-year-old boys from Aurora and a 30-year-old woman – were taken to a nearby hospital with minor injuries, troopers said.

Investigators said both speed and alcohol are considered to be factors in the crash. Denver7 asked for clarification on whether the driver had alcohol in her system, but troopers did not specify.

None of the occupants of the car were wearing seat belts, troopers said.
