CHAFFEE COUNTY, Colo. - 14-year-old Ian Dante Muro from Brighton was shot and killed during family hunting trip Saturday in San Isabel National Forest.
Muro's father and grandfather told the Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office the boy had gone off alone at about 5 p.m.
Family members said they heard a single gunshot and found the boy a short distance away, lying face up and motionless, with his rifle across his chest.
The teen had a gunshot wound to the chest, the Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office said.
"Although preliminary investigation indicates that the victim’s wound was self-inflicted accidentally, the official determination of the cause and manner of death will be released by the coroner," officials said.
The family was hunting about four miles west of County Road 221 near Forest Service Road 222 on national forest land. That is west of Salida, between Highway 50 and Highway 285.
