AURORA, Colo. – A police officer is on leave while a criminal investigation determines if he was married to two women at the same time.
Roland Albert is being paid while the investigation is ongoing and he is not working. He resigned Aug. 18 as treasurer of the Brotherhood for the Fallen, a nonprofit police organization with a chapter in Aurora that attends funeral services and supports families of police officers who are killed in the line of duty.
Records show a man with the same name as Roland Albert was married to a woman in July and the marriage certificate was recorded July 26 in Las Vegas.
Albert’s wife filed for divorce in Colorado on July 26, but the case is still open, the Colorado state court website shows. Divorces in Colorado are not immediate.
Contact7 learned the Aurora Police Department was made aware of allegations that Albert was married to two people at the same time, which is illegal.
An Aurora Police spokeswoman told Denver7 the district attorney’s office in Arapahoe County is investigating.
The district attorney’s office spokeswoman said the office does not comment on whether an investigation is pending, but said no criminal case had been filed in court as of Monday.
An attorney for Albert said Monday that he has no comment.
The Aurora Police Department issued a statement to Contact7 Investigates Monday afternoon.
"Last month, the Aurora Police Department was made aware of very serious allegations against an Aurora Police officer. Due the criminal nature of the allegations, Chief Metz immediately requested the assistance of the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office to handle the criminal investigation. The officer, a 10-year veteran of the department, was placed on paid administrative leave, per policy, and remains in that status today. If felony charges are filed against the officer, he will be placed on unpaid administrative leave pending the outcome of the criminal case," the statement said. "The Aurora Police Department takes these matters seriously and works to ensure such allegations are thoroughly investigated."
