Whipped by strong winds, the High Park Fire grew 1,430 acres on Sunday to a total 56,480 acres burned.

The fire's containment was 45 percent.

Winds gusting up to 50 mph fueled the fire, triggering a round of new evacuations through out the afternoon. The wind also grounded all firefighting helicopters for several hours in the afternoon.

A red flag warning will continue on Monday, with a forecast high of 98 degrees and winds with gusts reaching 30 to 50 mph, officials said. Tuesday and Wednesday's forecast also calls for extreme fire weather.

At 6 p.m. Sunday, Larimer County officials sent 331 telephone notifications for mandatory evacuations in the Soldier Canyon and Mill Canyon areas.

The evacuation area includes Lodgepole Drive and County Road 23 west and south, including Red Cedar Drive, and east to County Road 23, officials said.

Meanwhile, 473 pre-evacuation notifications were sent to residents of the Shoreline Road area south of Lory State Park, officials said. The pre-evacuation area's southern boundary is County Road 38E, the eastern boundary is Horsetooth Reservoir and the western boundary is Red Stone Canyon.

Earlier in the afternoon, a red flag warning triggered a mandatory evacuation for the Hewlett Gulch subdivision.

The Larimer County Sheriff's Office sent 96 emergency telephone notices telling residents to leave the area immediately and to drive cautiously because of heavy smoke in the area.

The Hewlett Gulch subdivision evacuation included these areas:
  • Hewlett Gulch Road
  • Swan
  • Snow Cliff Road
  • Deer Meadow Way
  • Star View Drive
  • Gobbler's Knob Court
  • Happy Jack Road
  • Sara Lane
  • Mount Mahogany
  • Rainbows End
  • Weatherbird Way
  • Red Tail Trail
  • Gordon Creek Lane
  • Wild Mountain Lane

The wildfire has scorched about 88 square miles of mountainous forest land and destroyed at least 181 homes, a record for Colorado.

The destructiveness of the High Park Fire burning 15 miles west of Fort Collins surpassed the Fourmile Canyon wildfire, which destroyed 169 homes west of Boulder in September 2010.

A red flag warning has been issued for the fire area until 8 p.m. as wind gusts are expected to reach 50 mph in the Poudre Canyon Area. In preparation for the hot weather, a significant number of fire crews have been assigned to this area and crews have been securing lines on the northern perimeter.

As many as 1,631 fire personnel are working on the wildfire, including 103 fire engines, 17 helicopters, three Blackhawk helicopters from the Army National Guard, five heavy air tankers and six other fixed wing aircrafts, which was sparked by lightning and is 45 percent contained.

Twelve Type 1 crews have constructed a fire line from the intersection of Buckhorn Road and Cougar Drive up to White Pine Mountain. Firefighters plan to continue this fire break to Old Flowers Forest Road 152.

On the north end of the fire, fire crews are improving the line along Poudre Canyon on Highway 14 and are bringing the fire to the road. Spotting potential is high, especially in the Poudre Park and Little Narrows areas. The east and southeast end of the fire is currently in patrol status and fire crews continue to support structure protection efforts with structure resources.

Incident commander Bill Hahnenberg said he is confident with the resources on hand, noting that 529 structures have been protected.

The current cost of the fire to date is now estimated at $10.8 million.
