Golden Man Wins $10.4M Slots Jackpot In Reno

John Johnson Was In Reno For Bowling Tournament

A Golden, Colo., man still can't believe he went to Reno, Nev. for a bowling tournament and ended up with $10.4 million at an airport slot machine.

John Johnson had just gotten off his plane back from Denver at the Reno-Tahoe International Airport on Feb. 21, when he spent about $12 to play the statewide, progressive Megabucks MegaJackpot game.

Johnson said he came off the escalator at the airport and something just drew him to one particular slot machine. He said he prefers poker or craps when he gambles in Reno but he had a few minutes to kill and started putting coins in the slot machine.

Johnson won about $6 on the third play and came up with nothing on the fourth. He offered to let his wife push the button on the fifth try but she told him to go ahead.

"I said, 'OK, but you better find the attendant because I'm gonna win something really big,'" Johnson said. "And then it came up Megabucks, Megabucks, Megabucks."

He thought he won $10,000 but an attendant told him he had won $10 million.

"I'm sure it's going to be life-changing, but I'm not going to let it take me off the ground we've worked so hard to implement in our lives," Johnson said.

The 36-year-old mechanical engineer said he doesn't plan to quit his job at BCER Engineering in Arvada. His wife said she also plans to keep her sales job.

Johnson said they'll use the money to take care of their family, which includes two toddlers.
