Girl Dies After Collapsing During Elementary Recess

Counselors, psychologists, nurses and social workers are working with students and teachers at a Colorado Springs grade school where a fourth-grader collapsed during recess and later died.

Nine-year-old Kristen Cornell collapsed Friday at Stetson Elementary School in Falcon School District 49.

She was taken to Memorial Hospital, where she died.

The cause of death is not yet known.

School district officials confirmed the death on Monday, when students wrote letters and the district posted a death notice on its Web site.

"The teachers and staff at Stetson Elementary, and throughout the Falcon School District, are deeply saddened by this loss. Our hearts and thoughts go out to the family," the district statement said in part.

A Memorial service is planned at Shrine of Remembrance, 1730 E. Fountain Blvd., Colorado Springs.
