Scam calls demanded prepaid credit cards as payment from restaurants for nonexistent energy bills

WHEAT RIDGE, Colo. - Three restaurants in Wheat Ridge were contacted by a person demanding payment for past-due energy bills. Police and Xcel Energy say this is a scam.

The caller said the bill could be paid by purchasing prepaid Visa or MasterCard’s from local convenience stores, police said. The restaurants, however, did not owe any money to Xcel Energy.

Police said the restaurants each became suspicious about the call and contacted the utility and the police department.
