WHEAT RIDGE, Colo. - Metal thefts are on the rise in Wheat Ridge, police say. In particular, detectives report an increase in the number of stolen backflow preventers.
Police say $4,600 worth of the devices have been stolen in the last month.
Backflow preventers keep water that may be contaminated from re-entering a home or business through a sprinkler system. Each one contains metal worth a few hundred dollars.
The Wheat Ridge Police Department’s Crime Prevention Team suggests home and business owners write down the brand and serial number of their backflow preventers. Taking photographs of the backflow preventer is also suggested.
