Mother of runaways arrested on child abuse charges

WESTMINSTER, Colo. - The mother of two children who ran away Thursday night and were found Friday evening has been arrested on child abuse charges.

Detectives from the Westminster Police Department arrested Monique Vigil, 30, on 2 counts of child abuse criminal negligence - no injury.

Westminster police detectives will continue to work with Adams County Social Services regarding the welfare of the children.  Police said they wanted to thank the media, public, and other law enforcement agencies for their assistance finding Andrew and Diamond Vigil, aged 9 and 10 respectively..

"Police believe Andrew and Diamond frequently run away, finding friends and neighbors to stay with," police spokesman Trevor Materasso wrote earlier.

According to Materasso, the mother said the three siblings ran away after an argument with their mother about watching fireworks around 7 p.m.

The oldest sibling, a 12-year-old, returned home around midnight. Andrew and Diamond were last seen in the neighborhood of 73rd Avenue and Bryant Street around 1 a.m.

Materasso said officers conducted a door-to-door search in the neighborhood and used an emergency notification system to ask residents for help.

The two children were found safe near East 41st Avenue and Navajo Street in Northwest Denver at about 7:30 p.m. Friday.

The children often use public transportation through the metro area and frequently travel to visit family members in Aurora or Denver, police said.

Monique Vigil is being held in the Adams County Jail.
