WESTMINSTER, Colo. - An Adams 12 school bus driver previously charged with being drunk while driving students and adults between two schools is now also charged with 36 counts of child abuse.
The bus driver, Burton Carpenter, drove the group from Prairie View High School in Brighton to Mountain Range High School in Westminster and then sideswiped a vehicle as he entered the school parking lot, Westminster police said.
Carpenter was previously charged with driving under the influence, driving under the influence per se, careless driving, failing to drive in a single lane and of failing to stop a school bus at a railroad crossing.
The new charges include one count of child abuse with knowing or reckless conduct not resulting in injury for each of the 36 children on the bus and five counts of reckless endangerment related to each of the adults onboard.
Carpenter is scheduled to appear in court for an arraignment on Monday.
