THORNTON, Colo. -- Thornton police say someone driving the wrong way on Washington Street to avoid police hit another vehicle head-on.

Police said they located a hit-and-run suspect vehicle in a shopping center on 120th Avenue around 10:16 p.m. Tuesday.

When officers attempted to talk to the driver, the driver fled through the parking lot and onto 120th Avenue, police said.

"The suspect then traveled northbound in the southbound lanes of N. Washington Street at a high rate of speed," Thornton police said in a statement sent to Denver7. "Police terminated the pursuit in the 12400 Block of N. Washington Street."

Two blocks later, the suspect vehicle hit another vehicle head-on injuring four people inside. All four were juveniles, police said.

The driver of the second vehicle had to extricated from the vehicle and was taken by Flight for Life helicopter to a local hospital. Her three passengers were also hospitalized, as was the suspect driver.

"Alcohol is suspected to be involved in the accident," police said.
