LONGMONT, Colo. - A homeowner who struggled with a burglar was shot Wednesday morning with his own gun.
Longmont Police told 7NEWS the homeowner had taken his dog for a walk. When the man came back to his home on Portofino Drive at about 9:40 a.m., he said he confronted a burglar wearing painter's clothes.
The men fought over a gun the homeowner had inside the house and the homeowner was shot, according to Detective Commander Jeff Satur.
"He rushed that person, tackled them, got into struggle, and at that point he learned the guy was armed with one of his firearms. He was shot in the leg during the struggle," said Satur.
The burglar took off, and schools in the area were briefly put on lockout while K9 units searched the neighborhood.
"Having a loaded gun or weapon in your home, if you don’t take care of it properly, anything can happen," said Dana Hunt, who is building a new home in the area and is now concerned about her family's safety.
The homeowner was treated and released from the Longmont United Hospital.
The suspect was a white or Hispanic man, about 180 pounds who was wearing white painter's clothes, a hoodie-type shirt and a black cap.
