LAKEWOOD, Colo. – Officials from five different Colorado agencies are investigating what exactly killed several waterfowl over the weekend in Lakewood.

Between 12 and 20 waterfowl – primarily Canada geese as well as ducks -- were found dead in a pond near the area of South Vance Street and West Eastman Place Friday.

Investigators were only able to confirm that an unidentified pollutant was discharged in the area, but could not say what that pollutant was.

The remaining animals were taken to veterinarians for care, according to Ryan Moehring, a spokesperson for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife.

Water and soil samples were collected and are being processed at this time.

Officials from West Metro Fire, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of Agriculture, Fish and Wildlife and the Lakewood Police Department are asking the public to contact U.S. Fish and Wildlife should they come into contact with “impacted animals.”

Moehring said this is an on-going federal investigation.
