LAKEWOOD, Colo. -
An ex-boyfriend was shot and killed after police said he "quite possibly" forced his way into a Lakewood home where his former girlfriend was visiting a man Tuesday night, police said.
Lakewood police spokesman Steve Hipwell said police were called just after 10 p.m. on a reported shooting at a home on South Harlan Street near West Ellsworth Avenue.
A woman had gone to visit a male friend at the home and her ex-boyfriend showed up, Hipwell said. All three people knew one another.
After the ex-boyfriend burst into the home, he had an altercation with the male resident that ended with the ex-boyfriend being shot, Hipwell said. The man died at the scene.
The man involved in the shooting was taken to police headquarters for questioning and booked, police said. The man was released, pending an ongoing investigation into the shooting.
In addition to Lakewood detectives, members of the Jefferson County District Attorney’s office were on scene as the investigation continued.
The District Attorney's Office will make the final determination on any charges in the case, police said.
