GREENWOOD VILLAGE, Colo. -- Police are following FedEx and UPS delivery trucks in hopes of preventing people from stealing packages this holiday season. Officers with the Greenwood Village Police Department are watching the trucks to make sure no one is following them.
"Watching the delivery drivers, watching their truck route and then watching the packages once the delivery driver makes the delivery," said Det. Sarah Malafronte.
Package thefts are in the rise in parts of the Denver metro. The Denver Police Department reports 378 packages stolen so far this year, this time last year that number was 264.
Greenwood Village officers will continue their enforcement through the holidays. They're encouraging everyone to watch out for anyone suspicious in their neighborhoods.
Police offer the following tips to keep you from falling victim to a porch pirate:
- Send shipments to your office
- Ask a trusted neighbor to bring the package in
- Put large planters on the porch to better hide any deliveries
