GREELEY, Colo. -- Peace and quiet are why a lot of people live in Greeley, so the deafening roar of missing mufflers and squeals of speeding tires aren't sitting well with many, including the chief of police.

Officers wrote 57 citations for illegally loud cars and motorcycles Wednesday night into Thursday morning.

"It's just rude, and people are fed up with it. We're getting more and more complaints," said Chief Jerry Garner, who is directing his officers to crack down on the worst offenders. "This isn't something that we're going after poor people that can't afford to get their muffler fixed. These are folks who are deliberately making a lot of noise by squealing their tires by intentionally defective mufflers and exhaust systems."

The tickets can cost up to $150.
