GREELEY, Colo. - A former Greeley funeral director has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for stealing more than $31,000 from clients who prepaid for funeral services.
Paul Acuna was sentenced in Weld County District Court on Wednesday.
A jury convicted Acuna of one count of theft and 11 counts of forgery in December. The forgery involved contracts that enabled Acuna to take funds from a Department of Human Services program that helps low-income families afford funeral arrangements.
Acuna also pleaded guilty to one count of theft involving 13 victims.
One of the alleged victims was Alfred Silva, who told 7NEWS in December 2012 that he thought he was getting a good deal from a good guy.
"He seemed real honest," said Silva.
Silva said for just $6,700, Director Paul Acuna assured him his funeral would be taken care of, including the service and the casket.
"We were making monthly payments and we paid him almost $5,000," Silva said.
When Silva stopped getting receipts from the business he said he called, but the line was disconnected.
The court still is deciding how much Acuna must pay in restitution.
