A second suspect has been captured after last week’s Craigslist robbery that left the first suspect dead.

David Ernest Mascarenas, 54, is being held on a $500,000 bond and will have his first court appearance Monday, according to Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Jacki Kelley.

He was arrested Friday at an apartment complex in Federal Heights. Mascarenas is being held for investigation of first-degree burglary aggravated robbery and identity theft.

On Jan. 24, a Jefferson County homeowner met two men at his South Taft Court home regarding several items he was selling on Craigslist.

According to Kelley, one of the men was armed with a handgun and robbed the seller, after tying him up. The homeowner was able to free himself as the two men left the residence. He got his gun and confronted the suspects outside, shooting at the man who was stealing his car. The wounded suspect was rushed to a nearby hospital, but died from his wounds. He was identified as 38-year-old David Martinez.

The second suspect was able to escape in another vehicle.

Investigators got a break in the case when the victim’s credit cards were used at an ATM and surveillance photos of the suspect were obtained.

The Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office is investigating the fatal shooting to determine if charges are warranted against the homeowner.
