FREDERICK, Colo. - A 3-year-old boy in Frederick died from an accidental gunshot wound to the head, the Weld County Coroner reported Tuesday.
The boy has been identified as Sheine Steine.
Frederick Police Chief Gary Barbour said the boy's mother, Dione Warren, called 911 at 9:45 a.m. Monday after she found her son unconscious and bleeding from a head wound. He was found in his parents' bedroom upstairs.
When police and fire paramedics arrived, they found a .40 caliber Glock model 23 near the preschooler's head.
"We have no reason to believe this was anything other than an accidental firing of the gun while the child handled it," Barbour confirmed to 7NEWS.
The boy was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital by ambulance and pronounced dead around 11:15 a.m.
Barbour later confirmed to 7NEWS that the semiautomatic gun was legally owned by the boy's stepfather, Jeremy McCollem, who was not home at the time.
No one has been arrested and the situation remains under investigation.
