FORT COLLINS, Colo. -- Police are investigating why an off-duty Colorado State Patrol trooper ran through a stop sign and triggered a crash that seriously injured three people and himself.

The crash happened Sunday at 7:25 p.m. at the intersection of Giddings Road and Richards Lake Road in Fort Collins.

Investigators said Trooper Brian Pettit was driving his personal vehicle, a 2016 Toyota Camry, that "failed to stop for a stop sign."

The Camry was hit by a 2017 Buick Enclave. Both vehicles ended up in a nearby field.

The driver and the front passenger in the Enclave were taken to the hospital with serious injuries. Pettit and his juvenile passenger were also taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

Pettit has been with the Colorado Sate Patrol for five years.

"Because this incident occurred in the 8th Judicial District, involved a law enforcement employee, and serious bodily injury occurred, it meets the requirement for Critical Incident Response Team activation," Fort Collins Police said.

Police do not believe alcohol or drugs contributed to the collision.

Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to call Officer Tim Brennan at 970-416-2229.
