FORT COLLINS, Colo. - Fort Collins' first licensed retail marijuana shop will begin to sell recreational marijuana on Friday.
Organic Alternatives, at 813 Smithfield Dr., is the first of Fort Collins' existing medical marijuana dispensaries to obtain a local license to sell retail pot. The city passed an ordinance in 2014 requiring that only existing medical marijuana businesses may apply for local retail or cultivation licenses.
According to records released on June 3, the state has issued retail marijuana licenses to two other Fort Collins businesses -- Choice Organics Inc. at 346 E. Mountain Ave. and Flower Power Botanicals LLC at 1308 Duff Dr.
Before they can start retail sales, however, those businesses must obtain a local license as well. Chief Deputy City Clerk Rita Harris said Wednesday that neither of the two businesses currently has applications pending. Once they do, the process took two months for Organic Alternatives, but there is no mandated deadline.
Colorado voters legalized retail marijuana sales statewide effective Jan. 1, but individual municipalities can opt out.
