FORT COLLINS, Colo. – An armed man shot by police early Saturday in Fort Collins was carrying a pellet gun, investigators from Fort Collins Police Services said Sunday.
The incident happened following a report of a burglary in progress in the area of Dunbar Avenue and Hastings Drive at around 8 a.m. The caller, who identified himself as Austin Snodgrass, 25, told police he came out of his room and saw an unknown person stabbing his roommate.
Two officers arrived at the scene a short time later and when they approached the home, Snodgrass came out with a gun in hand and confronted officers, according to a Fort Collins Police Services official.
Snodgrass is seen on a video recorded by a neighbor coming out with his right-hand raised near shoulder level. One of the officers then fires his weapon several times.
The weapon Snodgrass was carrying turned out to be a pellet gun replica of a Walther handgun, according to a police official.
No evidence of a disturbance was found inside the home, the official added.
Detectives contacted the alleged stabbing, found that he was not injured, and confirmed that he was not in the home at the time of the incident.
Snodgrass was taken to Medical Center of the Rockies and remains in critical condition. The officers were not injured.
Officer Matthew Brede, a six-year veteran of Fort Collins Police Services, was placed on paid administrative leave per department policy.
The Eighth Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team was activated to investigate the incident. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact Sgt. Heffernan at (970) 416-1985.
