Safeway robbery suspect identified by tips, arrested a few hours after surveillance photo release

ERIE, Colo. - Tips from the community led police to identify and arrest the man they believe is responsible for robbing a Safeway in Erie.

Preston Blake Powell was pulled over around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday and arrested on Interstate 25 near U.S. 66. Police said officers spotted his vehicle after tips led them to identify him as the suspect.

Earlier in the day, police released a description and surveillance photo from the robbery of the Safeway pharmacy at 3333 Arapahoe Road on Monday. They said the suspect had approached the pharmacy window with a note demanding drugs.

Police said Powell was arrested without incident and booked into the Boulder County Jail on charges of robbery and unlawful possession of controlled substances. Both are felonies.

Erie Police said anyone who may have information about the robbery is asked to contact Detective Dan Niemoth of the Erie Police Department at 303-926-2835.  The case number is 14-2159.
